Customer Quilts from February - Now...

So...I haven't been posting lately because I have been sidetracked by some medical issues. Did I say sidetracked? Oops..I may have actually been derailed. I spend most of the spring being sidetracked by helping with various volunteer projects. They took much of my time and I am glad I could help out. Then, last June I was diagnosed with Mastocytosis--which, in a nutshell, is a rare and incurable illness that pretty much messes up my whole body. (That's where the derailment comes in.) I've been taking medications and am feeling much better, however it has been and will still be a long process. Since the times I feel good are such a precious commodity, I've been spending them quilting rather than posting. Hopefully I'll be able to keep on top of things now. We'll see...

Invisible Machine Applique: Simply Amazing

Last week, I took a workshop from fabric/pattern designer and quilter Kim Diehl. She came to our quilt guild for two days of workshops to teach her method of invisible machine appliqué. In case you're not in the know, appliqué (in quilting terms) is a method used to create designs on a quilt with pieces placed on top of the fabric and then sewn in place--either by hand or machine.

There are several different ways to appliqué, but I prefer the look of needle-turn for it's clean edges and no-show thread. However, needle-turn takes a lot of time because it is all done by hand. Well, Kim's invisible machine appliqué method is just what the name implies: appliqué attached by sewing machine where the thread is pretty darn near invisible. When done correctly, it looks fabulous. And that's what I've been trying to perfect on my project all week. Here is a picture of Kim's wall hanging (and the one I'm working on as well). I'll post a picture of mine when I'm finished.

July and August Customer Quilts

July and August came and went so quickly! I did a few quilts during my "slow" quilting months and had some time for a fun family vacation to Southern California. Now the kids are back in school and I've even had a few telephone calls about getting quilts done in time for Christmas. Can it be time for the Christmas quilt rush already? I'd much prefer getting them done now rather than December 17th, though. My first picture actually is a Christmas throw that I did in July but it was a store sample pieced by Jessica S. for the local quilt shop, so it needed to be done early enough to be on display for a while. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

This cute Christmas throw was for Jessica S. I quilted snowflakes, swirls and loops in the quilt body, swirls in the red inner border, and snowflakes and loops in the big outer border.

This throw was for Julia T. and has loops, vines, and flowers as well as detail and outlining on the applique. I love the pinks, greens, and reds in this quilt.

This BYU quilt was for Julia T. I quilted stars, loops and swirls in the quilt body, stars and loops in the blue inner border, and large swirls in the outer border.

This queen size scrappy quilt is for Chris L. I quilted loops and swirls in the quilt body, swirls in the red inner border and the scrappy outer border, and large double loops in the big black inner border.

This bright Yellow Brick Road is for Launa G. and was pieced by her daughter Becca. She did a great job! I quilted this with an all over flower/swirl/vine pattern and hid Becca's name in it as well. She picked some fun colors!

Not a very good picture, but I loved the colors of this throw for Kristin P. I quilted it with an all over floral pattern.

Here's a beautiful Civil War Era sampler from Shelley B. I quilted feathers and swirls in the blocks, double loops in the sashing, feathers in the diamond border, stars & loops in the dark blue border, and feathers & swirls in the outer border. Whew!

I love this beautiful floral medallion in the center of this sampler quilt by Shelley B. I echoed the floral design in the center and quilted a vine & floral pattern in the background and blocks with leaves in the sashing.

And a second floral medallion quilt for Shelley B.

I did this beautiful Friendship Star lap quilt for Gayle W. with feathering in the background of the blocks, a double echo line inside the star, double loops in the sashing and feathers in the dark blue border.

Here are two more Underground Railroad quilts for Shelley B. I quilted them both with feathering inside the blocks, double loops in the sashing and feathers and swirls in the outside border.

And this Underground Railroad for Shelley B. has swirls in the sashing rather than the double loops in the other one. She does such a beautiful job with her piecing and fabric choices. I love these quilts!

Quilts of Valor

Today I finished and turned in a quilt to Quilts of Valor. Quilts of Valor is an organization whose mission is to provide a quilt for all the wounded soldiers, whether physically or emotionally, who have served in the War on Terror. So far, they've awarded 26,125 quilts to our servicemen and women who have been injured in the line of duty. So amazing! What a great reminder of how good and generous quilters can be! Each one of those quilts was lovingly pieced, quilted, and donated to a very deserving soldier. A long time ago, I promised myself that if I were blessed enough to have a hobby-turned-business from my home then I would try to bless the lives of others with my talents. This is just one way I can do that--by making a quilt to thank someone who has sacrificed for our country. For more information, visit the Quilts of Valor website. Here's a picture of mine.

HMQS 2010

Last weekend, I went to HMQS in Salt Lake City for some longarm quilting classes and to see the fabulous quilt show. I came away from the classes with lots of new information about designs (lots and lots of designs), new techniques, threads, gadgets, supplies, and even how to make a show quilt! I've been thinking it would be lots of fun to make a show quilt now that I've learned some tips and tricks about how to do it. I think I'll do that in my spare time. (Translation: I'll never do one because I have no spare time). But I can dream, right?

Here's the quilt that won Best of Show for 2010:

Just beautiful. So many of the show quilts use embroidery, fabric painting, and different kinds of embellishing to make them absolutely stunning. The picture really doesn't do this quilt justice.

The main reason I went was to take some classes from some very talented ladies who are well-known in the longarm quilting world. If you want to check out a little bit about each of them, just follow these links.

Renae Hadaddin--gorgeous show quilts that have won many awards.
Sally Terry--best selling author and inventor of the "Terry Twist" quilting technique.
Kim Brunner--travels to teach at quilt shows and has won best teacher awards. I can see why--I LOVED her class!
Pam Clarke--famous for her "Designs With Lines" quilting technique which uses minimal marking and produces fabulous quilting designs based on marking with lines.

All my classes were fabulous and I would take a class from any of these teachers again--I had a great experience with all of my classes this year, and hope to make it back sometime.

February & March Customer Quilts

So here it is almost May and I'm finally posting my customer quilts for February & March. I've been incredibly busy quilting, greenhousing (not a word, I know) and watching my girls' dance competitions. So on to the pictures...

Cute scrappy throw for Heather B. I quilted this with an all-over swirl pattern.

Straw Hat Sam antique quilt for JoAnn W. I quilted this with a small stipple all over and did a little tacking down on each Sam so I didn't take away from the cute applique.

Cute fall wall hanging for JoAnn W. I quilted this with an all-over loop pattern in the body of the quilt and added some detail to the pumpkins, and I did pumpkins & vines in the outside border.

I love these darling baby quilt samplers from JoAnn W. I quilted different detail in each of the blocks.

This adorable ladybug baby quilt was for Bette G. I quilted flowers, loops, and vines throughout this one with some detail in the applique flowers. I quilted flowers and vines in the outside border.

This darling fairytale quilt was from Betty W. I did swirls in the red sashing, meander in the map blocks, and detail on the castle--tight stipple to give a rock effect, and clouds in the sky above the castle. I also quilted double loops in the green border and a swirl pattern in the blue outside border.

And 3 more Aggie Star wall hangings for Utah State University. Each one is a little different because I used scraps from the bigger quilts I've done. The bigger quilts measure 72" square, and these ones are 36" square. And yes, I know they're blurry. I had the wrong camera lens on, and that's the best I could do before I sent them out the door.

Lissy's Flowers for Julia T. I love these ragged flowers that look like lollipops. I quilted this one with an all-over flower & vine pattern with flowers, leaves and vines in the outside border.

Here's a sweet pink & brown patchwork quilt for Julia T. with some cute rick-rack detail in the corners. I quilted a hodge-podge of flowers, leaves, vines, swirls & loops in the body of the quilt. The brown inner border had little pink stars on the fabric, so I quilted stars & loops in that border and flowers & vines in the outside pieced border.

And the next 6 pictures are some large Grandmother's Garden table toppers that I quilted for Marilyn G. She hand pieced each one of these, and I love all the different 1930s reproduction prints she chose to make each one look a little different. I quilted an assortment of swirls, flowers and double loops in each row.

The Little Mermaid

I just finished making 13 of these Little Mermaid blocks for our quilt guild friendship block exchange. The theme this year was fairy tales. I had several fairy tales to choose from, but I had all kinds of ideas about the textures and colors you'd find under the sea, so Little Mermaid it was. At first I was unsure if I could translate my ideas to a quilt block, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm excited to go to the exchange this morning and see all the blocks I'll be getting back!

December Customer Quilts

Here are pictures of the customer quilts I did during the month of December. I was able to do all these and still get ready for Christmas. Yay!

This is a cute snowball block lap quilt for Jill G. I love this fabric--it's so bright and cheery!

Here's a closeup shot of one of the snowball blocks. Jill asked me to quilt a snowflake in the center of each one.

Another lap quilt for Jill G. This one is pieced in half-square triangles and I quilted an all-over swirl pattern.

Here's a picture of a darling autumn wall hanging for Ann L. I quilted this one with an all-over leaf pattern in the body of the quilt and pumpkins and vines in the border.

And the first of four queen size quilts for Shelly B. This one is a sampler in 1930s era prints. I quilted the body of the quilt in an all-over flower pattern, and quilted loops, leaves & vines, and large flowers in the borders.

Here's the second of the four for Shelly B. This and the next two are Underground Railroad samplers made from Civil War era reproduction prints. I quilted this one with a feather pattern in each block, loops in the sashing, and the same feather pattern in the big outer border.

And the third for Shelly B. Another Underground Railroad. I love the colors she chose for these. I quilted a feather pattern in each of the blocks, swirls in the sashing, and the same feather pattern in the big outer border.

And the fourth for Shelly B. She has obviously been very busy piecing such beautiful quilts. This one is my personal favorite, though. I quilted a feather pattern in each of the blocks, a double loop pattern in the sashing, and a feather pattern in the big outer border. I think Shelly may have inspired me to make one of my own! I guess I'll add that to my project list.

And last but certainly not least, here is a beautiful wall hanging for Peggy E. The picture is small, but it is all I have. This was a 50th wedding anniversary gift, and I quilted leaves & vines in the cream background, small stipple in the large blocks, and feathers in the outside border.

Looks Like I Missed One

I'm not sure what happened, but I missed this quilt in my October post. This one is a Halloween wall hanging for Marilyn L. that she made from blocks she got in a friendship exchange in her quilt guild. I love how she put everything all together! I quilted this one with different backgrounds in each block and detail on the applique pieces, and I did pumpkins and vines in the purple border. Sorry I didn't post it earlier, but now this cute quilt gets its very own post :)

October and November Customer Quilts

This time of year is extra hectic for quilters, so I'm combining two months into one post. Here are the customer quilts for October and November...

Fun and funky lap quilt for Jayme A. I quilted this one with paisley feathers & swirls, and she put brown Minkee on the back. I know the little girl who gets this for Christmas will love cuddling up in it!

One of two twin size patchwork quilts for Patty J. These are for two of her grandsons for Christmas, and I'm sure they'll love them. She even embroidered their names in one of the blocks.

Here's the second for Patty J's grandson. I quilted these with an all over pattern of swirls, loops, and stars.

Here's a baby quilt for Julia T. that her niece pieced. I love the ragged lollipop-looking flowers, and the fabrics are darling. This one has light green Minkee on the back so this baby will be spoiled with a soft quilt right from the start!

And last but not least, here are some more USU quilts. These ones are wall hangings that they requested. I made them from the scraps of the larger quilts. The large "Aggie Star" quilts measure 72 x 72 inches, and these wall hangings are cute miniature versions that measure 36 x 36 inches. I did two of these in October.

Here's the first one and the pictures that follow are closeups of the front and back, as well as the second quilt's front and back.

**I've also been working on a few gorgeous queen size quilts for Shelly B. but don't want to post pictures of any of them because she hasn't seen them in person yet. I'm trying to get them all done and back to her soon so she can start binding them. As soon as she gets them, I'll post pictures.

Shooting Stars

Two years ago, I took a class from Nancy Raymond at Whimsy Cottage in Salt Lake City. She taught the class at our quilt guild spring retreat and also treated us to an amazing trunk show that showcased her fabulous whimsical and funky style.

When I signed up for the class, I had only seen a picture of the quilt and so I could not tell the amount of work involved in the piecing. What the picture doesn't show you is that the stars are hand-appliqued to the background squares, and the cream colored bursts in the middle are 3-dimensional pieces sandwiched in between each star piece. I did all the star piecing work by hand, then finished the piecing with my machine. It was also the first quilt I did on my new Fusion.

It was more work than I thought I had signed up for, but I am very pleased with the finished quilt. I recommend making this one only once. Here is a full picture of "Shooting Stars":

A Blanket for Holland

I made this mitered-corner baby blanket for my new nephew, Holland. I used a striped minkee for the small square on the front, and a flannel sports print on the back. Here are some pictures of the front and back of the blanket:

Jelly Rolls and Layer Cakes

And no I'm not talking about food--I'm talking about fabric, of course! In case you don't know, a jelly roll is a set of 2 1/2 inch wide by 44 inch long strips of fabric all cut from a single fabric line and then rolled up sweet-roll style--all ready for you to use for your next scrappy quilt project.

A layer cake is similar, except you get a stack of 10 inch squares rather than a roll of 2 1/2 inch strips. The thing I love about jelly rolls, layer cakes, sweet rolls, turnovers, charm packs, (yes, I'm still talking about fabric) is that you get a little sample of each piece of fabric in a whole line without having to buy a lot of yardage.

The One That Got Away

Meet the New Fusion!

I've upgraded to the new HQ Fusion, and I'm so excited! It will be arriving bright and early Thursday morning, and then I'll be busy practicing up on some new techniques, brushing up on some of my favorites, and becoming familiar with my new machine.

A little information about the Fusion:

High-quality professional machine
Stitch regulator creates perfectly even stitches every time
Longer arm for larger quilting area
Professional table and roller system holds king size quilts
Improved roller system creates more even distribution of fabric during quilting

Although the stitch regulator is computerized and creates stitches that are uniform in size, my designs are still done freehand style and are not computerized in any way, so the difference you will see on your finished quilt will be in the even stitch length. Stay tuned for a customer appreciation promotion coming in the near future...

Apron Giveaway Celebration!

Grandmother's Garden in Progress

I like to have a hand-work project to keep me awake while riding in the car on road trips. And last weekend was quite a road trip as we made the 6 hour trek to and from St. George, plus the all-day trip to the Grand Canyon! Here is my progress so far, and maybe in another 10 years, I'll have enough for a whole quilt :)

Cancer Quilt

I made this quilt for my friend after her husband passed away from pancreatic cancer not too long ago. The blocks are made of squares I cut from his shirts. I am still working on one similar to it for her daughter, and I hope they enjoy this rememberance of him. I have extra shirts and pants that I am planning to make into quilts for charity, hopefully pediatric cancer patients. And thanks to Peggy E. for help cutting and piecing!

Here's the whole quilt. I thought the brown linen-pattern fabric I used in the sashing looked sort of like pants.

Jessi's Bedspread

Here's another quilt that is a couple of years in the making. I saw this pattern online here and made it in pinks and browns rather than the bright colors on the original pattern. I also used pink and brown chenille for the flower petals. I loved this line of fabric called "In the Pink" by Buggy Barn and thought Jessi's room would be the perfect place to put it.

I'll have to put pictures of it on her bed when I get the pillows and dust ruffle finished, walls painted, etc. In other words, don't look for it anytime soon.

Halloween Friendship Quilt

Just in time for Halloween...

This quilt is one that I made from friendship exchange blocks from my quilt guild two years ago. For anyone not familiar with friendship exchanges, here is a brief run-down of the rules. Someone in charge chooses a theme, color, block size, etc. and organizes the exchange. If you choose to join the exchange, you will make one block for each person who participates, including yourself. For example, if 24 people join, you'll make 24 identical blocks and trade them with everyone else on swap day. It is a fun way to make a few blocks and get a bunch of different blocks in the end. Participation is optional. Creativity is encouraged.

So, this Halloween friendship exchange quilt is two years in the making and finally finished. The only rules for this one were a halloween theme and block sizes that were divisible by 3. It was fun to do--kind of like putting together a puzzle, and I am happy with the end result.

April Customer Quilts

Well, April flew by way too quickly, and here are the pictures of my customer quilts. Between quilts, I tried to sell my old house, settle in to my new house, keep my kids dressed in clean clothes, and in all my spare time I tried to work on my own quilting projects. (My list of unfinished projects I am working on has not changed a bit.)

On the calendar for may is the "Sister's Weekend" (no, not Sisters, Oregon), but all the Kartchner girls will be getting together for a few fun days and nights of quilting, food, movies, and lots of laughs--you know, good girl bonding time. We like to make the same quilt pattern each time, but with our own personal choice of fabric, so it's fun to see how different and cute all the quilts are when we are finished. Of course, I get to quilt them all, so look for them on my May posting of customer quilts. Who knows, they may even get their very own post! This year, we loved the "Double Denim" pattern (available at Red Rooster by Anita Cranney) so much that we decided that would be the qulit to make for "Sister's" this year. It's very easy, and has lots of potential for creativity. Some of us may use denim, some not. We'll just have to see. Here's a picture of the Double Denim I did for a customer this month:

Here's a fun pattern I got for cost from my online fabric swap group. It's by Pat Speth of Nickelquilts fame and is fat quarter and charm pack friendly. I haven't checked the pattern lately, but I would imagine it could be made using a jellyroll as well. Anyway, when I saw the pattern I thought it would be fun to use charm squares from Moda's Tiddley Winks line. Even though I finished it a while ago, I haven't posted it on my blog yet. So--here it is!

Button Up Buttercup

Wow, is Jessi a lucky girl! She got two quilts in a matter of three days. First, "Clara", and now "Button Up Buttercup". Someone in my quilt guild showed this pattern about a year ago, and I loved it. So, when Moda's Spring Fling line came out, I thought it would be perfect for my girls. (Now, keep in mind this quilt is a year in the making--that's about how fast my kids get their projects from me because I take on too many personal projects and am busy quilting for customers.) Anyway, after I was sufficiently tired of hearing Jessi whine for her "Clara" quilt, I decided to push myself to get this one done. Maybe if she had this one, she wouldn't be so anxious to get the one from the LQS, right? Well, I finished this quilt about the same time she finally was reunited with "Clara". Go figure.

This is a closeup of the ragged flower in the center. I did mostly a stipple and swirl pattern in the center of the quilt, the borders were flowers, leaves, and swirls.

The back is minkee and I did it in Jessi's other favorite color: blue. Mmmmmm . . . blue minkee, so soft.

And finally, here is a close up of the borders.

Am I a Winner? Not so much.

I am definitely not lucky. I made these three (yes, count them, THREE) blocks for my quilt guild's blockjack drawing last month. I thought that making three blocks would increase my odds (which technically, it did because I got one entry per block), and thus render me a winner in the drawing--but no. I can take solace in the fact that my aunt won, so I can visit my blocks at her house. And, if I can't win, then I'm glad someone I know and love did. At least I have the pattern and the experience of making three blocks so when I finally do get around to it, I can make my own quilt. Right? Let's just add this to the running list of quilt projects floating around in my head, and we'll see which ones make it to fruition. Too many quilts, too little time.

Jessi and "Clara"--BFF

Can a quilt and a little girl be best friends? Possibly. Actually, yes. I did this quilt sample for my LQS, and it's called "Clara" from P&B's Clara line. As soon as I opened the fabrics, Jessi wanted the quilt. I explained that the quilt shop wanted to display the quilt for a while because it was a new pattern with new fabrics, and they wanted to show people a finished quilt to try to sell their fabrics. I promised her that as soon as they were finished displaying the quilt, it would be all hers. We returned the finished product and waited. And waited. And waited. For a while, it hung in the middle of the shop. Then they moved it to the front window. Every time we drove past (which was a lot because it is on the way to dance lessons), Jessi would shout "There's my quilt!", and then she would ask when she could have it. I again, reassured her that she could have it when they were done displaying it. After a couple of weeks, a new quilt was being displayed in the front window. Jessi was sure they were finished and she and her quilt could finally be reunited. Not so. When we went into the quilt shop, we soon discovered that it had been moved once again. I told Jessi to be patient, and she would eventually get her quilt. She waited through several trips to the store, but finally couldn't take it any longer. Seemingly out of nowhere, she started to cry. Now, I know it was weeks and weeks of waiting finally building up, and soon she was sobbing. She begged me to ask someone, anyone, who worked there if she could have her quilt back. I asked when they were going to be finished with the display, and as soon as Judy saw Jessi's red eyes, she took the quilt down, carefully folded it up, and presented it to it's grateful owner. Jessi happily took "Clara" home and hugged her friend constantly so she couldn't get away. Here is a picture of the two friends reunited:

Frenchy Bag by Amy Butler

Now that I'm "caught up" with my quilt pictures (okay, not really), I'll have time to start posting fun pictures of what I am working on right now! Last night I decided to make an Amy Butler pattern (Frenchy Bag), which I have secretly been stalking on the Internet for some time now. My LQS finally got the pattern in, and I thought it would be adorable in the "Ginger Blossom" line by Sandi Henderson. If you love fabric, check this line out--such cute fabrics! We're headed out of town for spring break, and what better way to travel than with a new, fun handbag, right? I have also been getting some handwork ready for the road trip so I'll still be working on some projects while I'm traveling. I'll be working on my "Shooting Star" qulit and "Gatherings". My quilt guild had a Spring retreat about a month ago, and I took the "Shooting Star" class from Nancy Raymond of Whimsy Cottage in SLC. This is the most ambitious quilting project I have taken on to date. The pattern is lots of small pieces and hand applique. But, the finished project was beautiful. We'll see how mine turns out. The other project I am taking with me is called "Gatherings", and it comes from a great book I found with lots of 3 dimensional patterns. I am suddenly attracted to texture in quilts and fabrics, and the gathered blocks will hopefully turn out great. I'll post pictures when I am finished, of course!

My Quilts

I thought it was about time to work on my quilt blog, so here are pictures of some of the quilts I have done either for myself or as gifts--and keep in mind that these pictures are displayed in no particular order.

This is a Valentine's Day table topper that I made from a free pattern I found online. I thought it was different how the pieces looked like they were woven in and out of each other.

This is a quilt I made for the humanitarian quilt project in my quilt guild last year. I believe it went to an orphanage in Mexico.

I made this as a gift for Miss Turpin, Alison's 4th grade teacher, from all the students in her class as a teacher appreciation gift. The kids got to choose their fabric from some of my scraps, trace their own hands, cut them out, and sign their names. So, in a way, they helped make it, too.

This is a 4th of July sample I did for my local quilt shop. They supply the fabric, and I do the labor. Then, they keep the quilt to display for a few weeks or months, and after that, I get to keep it. The pattern is called "Cherry Cheesecake", and the fabric is Moda 76 Trombones.

I wanted to do a quilt with a variety of quilting stitches so I could show customers some ideas of what I can do on the machine, so I made this quilt that I call "Spring Pinwheels". I didn't have a pattern for it, I just sort of made it up, and I like how bright and cheery it is.

I wanted to try quilting on my regular sewing machine, and this was my attempt at doing just that. I found it is definitely much easier to quilt straight lines on the regular machine as opposed to the long arm, but it is more bulky to work with shoving and turning the fabric around as I go. This is a pattern from Thimbleberries called "Sticks and Stones".

Thanks to Jayme for organizing the sister's quilting weekend (no, not Sisters, Oregon, which I would like to do someday, but all the Kartchner sisters got together and made our own variation of the same pattern). This pattern is "Turning Twenty", and is a great pattern for beginners.

Here is my halloween table topper/wall hanging that I made with Jayme and Margene a couple of years ago.

This is another sample for the local quilt shop. The fabric line is "Mistletoe Manor" by 3 Sisters for Moda, and the pattern is called "Checkerboard Posies". It doesn't look very much like Christmas, but it is anyway. I liked the different textures in the fabrics--and they were a challenge to quilt around.

This is a sideways view of a quilt I made from McCall's Quilting Magazine some time ago. It was one of the very first quilts I machine quilted, and if you look closely, I'm sure you can tell.

This is Alison's first quilt she ever pieced. She entered it in the county fair, and it won a blue ribbon! We call it "Bubblegum Picnic" because the colors are bright like bubble gum.

This is a baby quilt I made for my friend Marianne's cute baby, Alex. Then they moved. We miss you!

This is "Winter Blooms" by Buggy Barn. I made only one row, but the pattern actually has 3 rows. It has lots of little pieces, and I am hereby announcing I will never make it again. I am happy to have this one, though.

I like to find projects to use the 5 inch square packs (charm packs) that the fabric stores sell. It is a good and inexpensive way to get a piece of every fabric in a new fabric line. This fabric line is "Chocolat" by 3 Sisters for Moda, and I just sewed the squares together, added borders, and voila!--instant table topper!

Speaking of 5 inch squares, this is a "Nickel Quilt" that I made for my sister, Christine, when she got married a couple of years ago. It is made from 5 inch squares (aka "nickels"), and the patterns in this book are a great way to use up scraps, too!

Here is Jessi's princess quilt. She loves the bright colors, espcecially the pink, and the pretty princesses, castles, and puppies in the centers of each square.

This is Alison's bedspread--the pattern is "Yellow Brick Road".

I pieced these two wall hangings a long, long time ago, and they were among the first projects I experimented with on the long arm machine.

This is a wall hanging I made a while ago--I believe it is called "Home Sweet Home" by Bareroots.

I took a class to make this quilt several years ago. It was the first quilt I ever pieced, and I was hooked! The pattern is called "Minnesota Pinwheel".

This is another Bareroots pattern. I worked on the embroidery while watching and cheering for my kids at their soccer and baseball games. It is hanging in Alison's room.

After I made the flower wall hanging for Alison, I felt like Davis needed a wall hanging of his own. This is the "Bug Jar" quilt I made to go on his bedroom wall. The only problem, though, is it never really got finished, Davis grew up to quickly, and it isn't actually hanging on his wall. :( Note to self: never take on a project that won't be finished in time for it to be used.

These two quilts are "friendship" style quilts that we made with all the Kartchner girls. The rules were that you had to pick out your own dark and light fabric and make enough 9 patch blocks for everyone. Then, we exchanged all our blocks so we each got one from everybody. I put one together for Alison (on the top) and me (on the bottom). It was fun to see how everyone's quilts turned out differently.
